Recently, I got involved in a discussion with two Bernie
Sanders supporters and it was so interesting I thought I would share my
perspective. I am not going to use names in this article as I don’t view that
as the point and it sure isn’t my intent to embarrass anyone.
What started the discussion was posts demonizing Joe Biden,
Bernie or Bust movement and since I am currently a Biden supporter, I took
exception. Now I don’t wish to rehash the specific's of the discussion but it
seems to me that some Bernie supporters are taking us down the same road we
took when Hillary ran in 2016. These folks are going so far as to say that if
we don’t support Bernie Sanders we will
be at fault for Trump being elected, I really believe that is wrong since it’s
these folks that threaten a 3rd party nominee if Bernie doesn’t get
the nomination. To be fair, all the candidates running for the democratic
nomination have pledged to support the final nominee, so I don’t see that
happening with Bernie as I do believe he is a man of honor.
As democrats we should and must discuss the differences
between these candidates and how their policies would affect our country. It’s
also fair to discuss how the nomination of a given candidate would affect our
chances of beating Donald Trump as I believe that is the top issue important to
democrats. However, to say that Joe Biden is anti-labor is; one, not true and
two, is divisive. We don’t need to get in such a harsh discussion that it
prevents us from coming together to beat Donald Trump in November of 2020! We
definitely don’t need a movement that threatens to vote for anyone else if the
democratic nominee isn’t Bernie. To be
clear, I can vote for the Democratic nominee no matter who it is or how harsh
our discussion gets but that is not true for everyone. Criticize Joe for his
votes, that is fair but to use the term anti-labor? Republicans have shown us
what anti-labor looks like and while an argument can be made that democrats
have not done all they can for labor, to call one of the current candidate’s
anti-labor is to blur the lines of what anti-labor truly is! We don’t need any
more of that, hell, Trump blurs lines of normalcy on a daily basis. If we are
to truly separate ourselves from Trump supporters, we must use decency, truth
and facts as our tools of debate! Vigorously
defend the candidate you believe should be the next president but do so in a
manner of common good so that all anti-Trump Americans can come together in November
2020 and kick his ass out of office!
Finally, I understand folks that want to move democrats to
the left. I do. I even agree with some of them. However, if you do so in manner
that divides us, like republicans were divided by the Tea Party, even if we get
the White House, Senate and keep the House, it will leave us unable to pass any
legislation that helps Americans and advanced an agenda we would like to see
accomplished. Further, stopping republicans from their continued loading of our
courts is mandatory, we can’t let this go on for another 4 years! Let’s make
the slogan America or Bust, then kick republican ass!
